Climate change is a hugely important pillar of government policy. But election results and political leanings drive nations’ ambitions in this area, leading to fragmented outcomes.

With more than 70 countries holding elections in 2024, we asked our interns, Alice Jenkins and Gemma Osborne, to reflect on recent developments in climate policy. Gathering their thoughts in this article, they conclude that ambitious climate goals must be backed up by a heightened sense of urgency and the implementation of bolder, enforceable policies.

Practical steps governments could take include removing subsidies and tax incentives from fossil fuels, while addressing the issues holding back planning for energy-transition projects.
